Independent Schools of New Zealand is a group of 41 innovative and successful independent schools, educating over 25,000 young students each year. These schools range from pre-school to year 13 and provide either co-educational learning environments or provide for boys and girls separately. Some are newly established and some have now celebrated over 150 years of developing fine young New Zealanders.

School inspections
All state (non-integrated) school under the state of emergency, including Christchurch City Council, Waimakariri District Council and Selwyn District Council, will be contacted today to arrange a visual inspection of the buildings and playing fields. The inspection will be undertaken by Ministry staff a representative of its agents, School Support Ltd or Opus International Consultants Ltd.
Every school should be visited by 12 pm Tuesday 7 September 2010.
The inspection will inform a decision as to whether the Ministry can recommend to the Medical Officer of Health that the school can re-open and also what remedial work needs to be undertaken straightaway and what work can wait. If the inspection identifies structural issues a structural engineers report will be required. The structural engineer's report will be arranged through the Ministry.
The Ministry is using the attached checklist for its assessment. We recommend that the proprietors of all state integrated schools and independent schools undertake the same process and if any serious defects are observed to seek the advice of a structural or civil engineer. Once completed, proprietors should advise the Ministry on our help line 1SMpropertyhelp@minedu.govt.nz of the status of their schools so that a complete appraisal of as many schools as possible is available for referral to the Medical Officer of Health.
